Grass Fire The Tryon Volunteer Fire Dept was called out Sunday night about 10:20 to Chestnut Street in Tryon where the leaves and grass along the ditch were burning. Mrs. Clarence Scoggins has returned to her home in Tryon after being a patient at St Luke’s Hospital. Mrs. Margaret Thompson, of Teaneck, N. J has left for Hilton Head, S. C. after spending a week with her former neighbors, Rita and Bob Vierling, of Red Fox Road, Columbus. She was impressed by the beauty of the mountain area and by the courtesy and friendliness of the people. VFW Meets Tonight VFW Post No. 9116 and the Ladies Auxiliary will have a covered dish supper tonight at 7 o’clock at the Columbus Fire Department Hall. Each member will bring a small present for a "Yankee Swap." TUESDAY, DEC. 23,1980 All Western The 33rd Annual All Western Football Roaster was announced Sunday by the Asheville Citizen. Scott Arledge of Polk Central was named Honorable Mention as a lineman. Appalachian Conference performers named were, Mark Grant of Cherokee as a back; Steve Musser, Edneyville, Albert Crowe of Cherokee and Stacey Rogers. NCSD as linemen. Other honorable mentions were: (backs) Pepper Taylor of Cherokee; (linemen) Tiny Taylor of Cherokee, Archie Elliott of NCSD. Nominated For Naval Academy U. S. Rep. Lamar Gudger announced Saturday that he has submitted 10 nominees for competitive appointments to the U.S. Naval Academy. Under the competitive nomination system, the academy will review each nominee on a rating scale including scholastic achievement, athletic ability and extra-curricular activities. Mr. Pace works at Carolina Yarn Processors in Tryon. — Spartanburg Herald A note from Augusta L. Milhaupt states that since the accidental death of Dr. Charles G. Longenecker on Nov. 23rd a number of his patients and other friends are creating The Charles G. Longenecker Memorial Fund. This fund will be used at St. Joseph's Hospital in Asheville to erect a plaque proclaiming the Longenecker Memorial Outpatients Surgery. Funds will be used to purchase needed equipment for the outpatient surgery, much of which will be used in Dr Longenecker's speciality of plastic and reconstructive surgery Contributions may be made to the Charles G Longenecker Memorial Fund, in care of gi Joseph’s Hospital.
